1% for the Planet was created in 2002 by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies. Their aim was to build a global movement that inspires individuals and businesses to protect the planet and the futures of everyone and everything living on it.
Fast-forward 19 years and 1% for the Planet has helped support environmental nonprofits to the tune of over $280 million.
Here's a link to a really inspiring video which introduces 1% for the Planet.
Why is this so important?
It’s no secret that climate change is an issue that is escalating year-on-year. We believe that every single one of us has the responsibility to do something, however small, to make a difference. If we all pull together now, there is still hope for a bright future for all of us and for the Earth.
What does 1% for the Planet membership involve?
By joining 1% for the Planet, we commit to donating at least 1% of our annual revenue (not profit) to environmental nonprofit organisations that have been approved by 1% for the Planet.
It also gives us accountability – to every other 1% for the Planet member and to you, our users, that, regardless of our company’s performance (we donate 1% of our revenue whether we make a profit or not), we will always be doing something to give back.
